
Professor Richard G. Whitman
I am a Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent and a Senior Fellow of the UK in a Changing Europe initiative. I am also a Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). I am a former Head of the Europe Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).
My research expertise is the foreign and security and defence policies of the UK and the EU, including the impact of Brexit.
I am the author and editor of eleven books and have published over sixty articles and book chapters on European integration and UK foreign and security policy. I was a lead editor of the Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS) – the longest established international academic journal covering the politics and economics of European integration.
I was elected as an Academician of the UK Academy of Social Sciences in 2007 and was the 2017-2018 elected Chair of the British International Studies Association (BISA). I have also been appointed as an Academic Fellow of the European Policy Centre (EPC).

I have been called on to provide expert evidence to parliament, including the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, the EU Sub-Committee on External Affairs of the House of Lords, and the Committee for Exiting the EU, and I have regularly provided briefings for MPs, member of the House of Lords, UK government departments, the European Parliament, and senior business leaders in the UK and overseas.
